The linear cable engine on the Cable Ship IT Intrepid used to control the cable tension during laying. The cable engine is passing a fiber optic repeater which is used to amplify or "boost" the light signal required for the long length of the cable segment between Ketchikan and the deep sea branching repeater which is used to join three cables together. In the segment between Ketchikan and the branching repeater, seven repeaters are used, receiving and amplifying the signal between each.
