Preliminary survey data is used to determine locations for physical bottom sampling. Here
the gravity core sampler is being sent over the edge where it will plunge into the bottom
to extract a core sample for later analysis. In those locations where the bottom was too
hard for coring, a grab sampling tool was used to forcibly extract a bottom sample. During
sampling operations, the ship is precisely held in position with the bow thrusters. Bottom
samples are used to determine if cable burial is feasible.
